What is the Way and what is virtue?
What is the Way and what is virtue?
The root of morality is harmony. Taoism is the law of nature, the origin and belonging of all things, and Taoism is the law of nature; if one is in harmony with Taoism, one is virtuous, and to obey the laws of nature and act in accordance with them is virtue, which is the nature and endowment of all things. To violate the laws of nature and to act against nature is to lose virtue and to be punished!

Talking about some personal views, Dao, is behavior, is human instinct; virtue, is quality, is human thought.
"The Way and Virtue - Enlightenment of the Way and Virtue
North Garden: South Shore Wind

Tao, way. The natural way, the law, laws, etc., by which all things in nature exist. Dao law, the way of passing through. Natural way, the way of nature, the way of nature follows the laws, laws, etc. of its own existence. To follow the way, naturally. Against the way, since and otherwise.
There is a line in the book of Lao Tzu: "Man follows the way of the earth, the earth follows the way of the sky, the sky follows the way of the Tao, and the Tao follows the way of nature." Literally interpreted: Man follows the way of the earth, the earth follows the way of heaven, and then the way of nature. That is to say, man follows the laws and regulations of the earth, the earth follows the laws and regulations of the sky, the sky follows the laws and regulations of nature, and then forms his own laws and rules to conform to nature.

People's cognition of nature has a gradual process. People's cognition of nature, through observation, integration, feeling, discovery, etc., continue to the existence of nature, in the form of calligraphy, painting, poetry, music, singing, writing books and other forms of transmission, transmission, and so on, with the way of the birth of the way, against the way of the abandonment.
Roads, there are millions of them. Roads, there are millions of them. Life exists in the natural body of length, width and height, and coexists with nature. With the six desires of the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, man perceives the seven emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, thought, grief, fear, and surprise, and takes a keen interest in all natural phenomena; the Tao is the law of nature, and then the law of the Tao is natural.

Virtue, benevolence. Natural virtue, virtue in the world. Natural benevolence, benevolence for all beings. Virtue, in the long history of human development, is a guideline and norm that has been born out of obedience to the Way. In different periods of history, the standard of virtue varies, but the one word that runs through it is "goodness". Virtue is born in the good way. If you go against the grain, you are evil. The distinction between good and evil is in the human heart, and one knows whether virtue is good or bad.
Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching writes: ""The Tao may be Tao, but it is not a constant Tao. The name can be named, but not the eternal name. No name, the beginning of all things; name, the mother of all things." This shows that Tao is the mother of virtue, and without Tao there is no virtue. No name is the beginning of virtue, and name becomes the mother of virtue. Dao gives birth to virtue, virtue becomes benevolence, and benevolence is practiced throughout the world.

There is a process of growth in the formation of virtues that goes on throughout a person's life. Human growth is also a gradual process. This process, along with man's seven emotions and six desires, is constantly changing. "At the beginning of man, nature is good. Sex is close, and habits are far apart." The virtue of man is inherently good. Near Zhu red, near ink black. Virtue is the way of cultivation in one's life.
There are millions of virtues and millions of goodnesses in benevolence. In a world of materialistic life, how many people are able to cultivate their minds and bodies, their families and businesses, their talents and arts, and their country and government? How many people are able to cultivate their hearts and bodies, their homes and businesses, their talents and skills, and their countries and governments with "Tao", "virtue", "benevolence" and "goodness"? Those who cultivate the right fruit will be dragons traveling the world. Those who walk against the way will be rebellious. Morality begins naturally.

The revitalization of China begins with moral cultivation. The dream of the people of China also begins with the choice of morality. Traditional Chinese culture has a long history and is born in the right way. Traditional Chinese virtues are rooted in people's hearts and minds. Long history and culture, the essence of the sages' thoughts, the loss of time and light, and the continuous precipitation. The gentleman has the virtue of generosity, there will be the blessing of later life, naturally.
To move forward, starting from the moral development. The road to revitalization is long and far-reaching, and when the youth is strong, the country is strong. The revitalization of the countryside, its steam and rising, the rise of young people, the country is emerging. Moral cultivation, is the road of a person's life, the country's young people, to the country's revitalization of the choice of road to establish virtue, the country will be strong and prosperous. People cultivate the virtue of the three bodies, in order to correct the three views - the outlook on life, values, world view, will be thick life can be. The way of life is natural.

Thanks for the invite!
What is the "Way" and what is the "Virtue"?
Lao Tzu's Tao Te Ching has five thousand words, all of which are worth a thousand words, and if we use one word to express it, it is obviously the word "Tao". It is the Way of Man, the Way of Earth, and the Way of Heaven. As far as humanism is concerned, there is the way of being a human being, the way of seeking business, the way of nourishing life, the way of returning to the baby, the way of doing nothing, and the way of ruling by doing nothing. The way of management of "doing nothing" ...... etc.
As far as "virtue" is concerned, Lao Tzu categorized "virtue" into "superior virtue" and "inferior virtue". "If the upper virtue is not virtuous, it is virtuous. If the lower virtue does not lose virtue, it is to have no virtue." The criterion for differentiation is the difference in the form of expression, whether or not the "virtue" is expressed intentionally. The "upper virtue" is not the intentional manifestation of virtue, but the unintentional manifestation of it, a natural manifestation. The "lower virtue" is the intentional manifestation of virtue. Intentionality means purposefulness, reluctance, and hypocrisy. The results are not the same.
As for "virtue", it is virtue, character, a person's nature, his or her innate nature. "Virtue is the behavior of the Tao, and together they form "morality".
In the real world, when we speak of morality, it is an idea that is expressed in a very conscious behavior. It is a self-discipline inherent in benevolence and righteousness. Laws and regulations are mandatory, while rites are ethical and moral. Consciously respect the laws and regulations, is ethical, understand the performance of moral people, should be worthy of the whole society to promote, respect! Praise!
What is "virtue"?
In modern Chinese, the character "德" mostly means "morality", and its derivations include "mind" (e.g. "centrifugal departure from virtue"), "favor" (e.g. "gratefulness for virtue"), and so on. In modern Chinese, the character "德" mostly means "morality", and its derivations include "mind" (such as "centrifugal separation from virtue"), "favor" (such as "gratefulness"), and so on. Since ancient times, China has been a country that attaches great importance to "moral character", so our ancestors also took a lot of time to create the character "德".

From the above oracle bone inscriptions, the left side is "彳"(chì), which mostly means "walk" in ancient scripts, and the right side is an eye, with a straight line on top of the eye, which means that the eye has to be straight. The combination of the two means "to walk straight and to see straight".

It is an ideogram. The form of Jinwen is basically similar to that of Oracle, only that "a heart" is added under the eyes on the right side, and people at this time added a standard to the meaning of the character "德", i.e., in addition to the "line is correct, the eyes are correct", but also "the heart is correct", which shows that people are demanding higher and higher standards for the meaning of the character "德". At this time, people added another criterion to the meaning of the character "德", that is, besides "行正、目正", "心正", which shows that people have higher and higher requirements for the meaning of the character "德". The shape and structure of the small seal script basically follows that of the gold script, while the regular script follows that of the small seal script.

In the Guangyun Deyun, it says: "Virtue, virtuous behavior." That is to say, the original meaning of the character "德" is "morality and conduct". In Xunzi - Fei XII Zi, it is said, "If one does not know, then one should ask; if one cannot, then one should learn; if one can, then one should let it go; and then one should be virtuous." It means: if one does not know, one should ask others for advice; if one does not know how to do something, one should learn; if one knows how to do something, one should be humble; only then can one be regarded as a person of "virtue".

In ancient times, the word "virtue" has different meanings in different fields, such as Confucianism with "warmth, goodness, respect, thrift, and letting" as the five virtues of cultivation, and military science with "wisdom, faith, benevolence, courage, and strictness" as the five virtues of generals. The five virtues. But no matter what, "virtue" is always a good thing, with a noble character will be respected, "high moral standing" is the truth.
What is the Way and what is virtue? My answer:
"Tao" and "virtue" are two different philosophical concepts that first appeared in Laozi's Tao Te Ching.
One, what is the Word?
Lao Zi's description is: "Something mixed into the first heaven and earth was born, silent and lonesome, independent and unchanged, circumambient and not perilous, can be the mother of heaven and earth." Through Lao Zi's description, we learn that: the Tao is mixed into before the opening of the sky and split the earth, no sound and no image, not subject to any external influence, independent of the long existence of never stop, the cycle of operation and never exhaustion. It can be said that Tao is the root of everything; that is to say, everything is evolved from Tao. We can not help but ask, how can the Tao become the "mother of all things"? The Zhouyi-Series of Rhetoric says, "One Yin and one Yang is called the Tao." How did Tao become yin and yang? Lao Tzu further said, "Tao begets one, one begets two, two begets three, and three begets all things." One is the body of the Tao, like a taijitu, which has two fish, one yin and one yang, symbolizing the sperm and the egg; two is the sky and the earth, with the sky as the yang and the earth as the yin; and from the simple to the complex, the evolution of all things. Huainanzi Tianwenxun said: "Yin and Yang are harmonious, and all things are born". From this point of view, the Tao contains yin and yang, without the combination of yin and yang, there is no everything, yin and yang is the Tao.
Second, what is virtue?
The nature of "Tao" is embedded in all things, and its healthy functioning and development is virtue. In other words, virtue is the concrete embodiment of Tao; Tao is the body and virtue is the use. To be born but not to have, to be, but not to be, to grow, but not to dominate" is virtue; to be void, natural, simple, weak, and non-contentious is virtue. In Lao Tzu's view, virtue is divided into superior and inferior virtue, and Lao Tzu said: superior virtue has no virtue. What does it mean? That is: people with superior virtue, no concept of virtue, one word, one action, one main action, are in line with the law of "Tao", and take the initiative to use their own actions to realize the Tao, cultivate the Tao, is the lower virtue. For us ordinary people, the father is kind and filial, husband and wife are in harmony, brother and sister are respectful, honest and trustworthy, and kind and charitable, is the virtue. In short, everything naturally reflects the characteristics of the Tao in the course of its operation, which is virtue.

"Dao" and "virtue" are two concepts of our Taoism. Morality is one word, but Tao and virtue should be spoken of separately, each with its own meaning.
The word morality, in Chinese, can be traced back to Chapter 51 of the book Tao Te Ching, written by the pre-Qin thinker Lao Tzu. Lao Zi said: "The Tao is born, virtue is nurtured, things are shaped, and potentials are formed. That is why all things do not respect the Tao and value virtue. The Dao is honored and the virtue is valued, and there is nothing that can be ordained but is always natural." In this context, "Dao" refers to the truth that is common to both nature and the world, while "virtue" refers to human virtues, character, and the way of the king.
Zhuangzi, "The Outer Chapters - Heaven and Earth": "The one who passes through heaven and earth is virtue; the one who walks in all things is the Tao." The Taoists thought that the so-called nature of all things in heaven and earth was "Tao" and that the nature of all things was "virtue".
Qin - Huangshi Gong, "The Book of Vegetation:" "The Way is what man follows, so that all things do not know what they are made of. The Virtue is what people get, so that all things have what they want." The meaning is that Tao is a natural law, which everyone follows without realizing it, as is the case with all things in nature; virtue is acquisition, and acting according to virtue can make one's desires satisfied, as is the case with all things in nature.
In ancient times, Taoism and morality were two concepts, and there was no word for morality. The use of the word "morality" began with Xunzi's "Advice to Learning": "Therefore, learning to the end of the rite of passage is not enough, and this is the extreme of morality."
Tao, in its original meaning, is objective truth, such as the constitution, movement and change of nature, the objective development and change of society, and the birth, aging, sickness and death of human beings, which is the law of natural existence and development. It exists objectively and shapes the progress of human beings and society. It is only by adhering to it that society can be stabilized and harmonized, that human beings can be healthy and happy, and that nature can exist for a long time.
Virtue, in its original meaning, is conformity to nature. Society and human beings need to develop, to transform nature, to develop society and to create their own careers without violating the laws of nature, and to adapt to and transform nature without violating the principles of the Tao, so that human beings and nature can develop in the long term and coexist in harmony.
The Tao is carrying everything, virtue is showing everything in the Tao. The Tao is speechless and invisible, invisible and inaudible, and can only be recognized and perceived through the consciousness of the mind; whereas virtue is a concrete example of the Tao, an embodiment of the Tao, a heart act that can be seen, and an activity that is carried out through the perception of the Tao. Without virtue, the idea of the Tao cannot be understood and recognized so graphically. This is the relationship between virtue and the Tao.
The unity of morality and ethics together is morality. Morality is a social ideology, a code and norm for people's common life and their behavior. Morality often represents the positive value orientation of the society and plays a role in judging whether the behavior is justified or not, however, the concept of morality changes from time to time and from class to class. Therefore, morality belongs to the category of civilization.
When people do things and conduct themselves according to the laws of the Tao, they are virtuous and civilized.
To sum up, we can see that "Dao" means reason and "De" means virtue. For people, it is only when they are reasonable that they can be virtuous; and for nations, it is only when they are reasonable that they can have a society governed by virtue.
"The Tao is the general law of the universe in which everything operates and develops with each other, and it is eternal.
"Virtue" is the behavioral expression of doing things in accordance with the "Tao" after knowing the general law. The original meaning of virtue emphasizes that one should not go against the conscience and the laws of nature to develop and improve oneself, and that the Tao is hidden in the whole process of the development of everything from nothing to existence and then to disappearance, and that virtue is the understanding of the Tao. Virtue is the understanding of Tao, the behavior of people after they perceive the laws of nature. Also represents a person's self-reflective conscience, people are not sages who can not fault, so do things first before doing people, people should be tolerant of their own mentality to understand others, tolerance of other people's mistakes, so the virtue also reflects a person's culture, Confucianism explains the concept of virtue (benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and faith), but also the virtue of a person's good thoughts. Hundred goodness filial piety is the first, the lamb kneels, the crow feeds, Liu Hai plays the Golden Cicada. "There are friends from afar is not happy," "the sea of the hundred rivers is open to others," "alone is not as happy as the joy of all," "the big give and take the small give and take the small not to give and take "" Benevolence can be full, righteousness can be guarded, etiquette can be changed, wisdom can be both, the letter can be grams "so virtue is the pursuit of progress in the individual to continue to learn to amend their own words and deeds, in order to make their own to achieve perfection, accompanied by a lifelong purpose. Virtue is emphasized in a word of humility, high-profile work and low-profile behavior. Water is beneficial to all things without competition, such as jade, such as a gentleman.
'Dao' is reason, path, direction, way, method, approach. It also refers to a school of thought, the Daojia, represented by Laozi and Zhuangzhou.
'Virtue' is virtue, character, favor, good deeds, and heart's desire.
'Morality' is a social ideology, a code and norm for people's common life and their behavior. Different times and different classes have different moral concepts. Such as feudal morality, socialist morality.
Tao is yin, virtue is yang. Tao is movement, virtue is stillness; Tao is the ever-changing form and name, virtue is the unchanging heart of things. Virtue is the heart and virtue is benevolence. Virtue is the core of things, the `circle center′, and the Tao is the path of change, the path of life of things. Tao is the outer edge, virtue is the heart, Tao becomes the body, virtue becomes the body. (Personal opinion)
