This motto is also one of the most famous opening lines in the I Ching.

How to understand yin and yang, first of all, we have to start from the original meaning of "yin" and "yang".

The radical of these two characters is "阝", which is sometimes on the left side of the character and sometimes on the right side, representing different meanings. When "阝" is on the right side of the character, it equals to "邑" which means "邑", and so the characters are mostly related to cities, such as Guo, Bang, Chuen, Di, Suburb, etc. When "阝" is on the left side of the character, it equals to "阜". When "阝" is on the left side of the character, it equals to "阜" which means hillock, so most of the characters are related to hillocks, such as: 陵, 陸, 阪, 阿, 陡, 阻, etc.

The radicals "阝" for "yin" and "yang" are both on the left side of the character, which means that both characters are also related to the hillock. It turns out that the sun shines on the hillock, and the south side of the hill is always illuminated by daylight, which is "yang", while the north side of the hill is not illuminated by daylight, which is "yin". In the same way, the north bank of a river is illuminated by sunlight, which is "yang", while the south bank is not illuminated by sunlight, which is "yin". Therefore, the south of the mountain and the north of the water is yang, and the north of the mountain and the south of the water is yin.

Many place names in China follow this pattern, such as the city of Huayin, which is north of Mount Hua, and Jiangyin, which is south of the Yangtze River.

Later, the ancients derived the words "yin" and "yang".

Ancient scholars believe that everything in heaven and earth contains two factors, which are opposed to each other and transformed into each other, generating everything in motion, which is actually the contradiction according to Marxist philosophy. The opposition of yin and yang is not static and unchanging, but is transformed, conflicted and fused with each other, and generates all things in the process of change. So there is both yin and yang in everything, only in different proportions. If there is only Yin, or only Yang, it is impossible to constitute things. That is why Lao Tzu said in the Tao Te Ching:

All things carry yin and embrace yang, and they are in harmony with each other. (Tao Te Ching, Chapter 42)
