What are the medical effects of maitake?
What are the medical effects of maitake?
Maitong is a medicine that we often use to make tea to drink in our daily life, I heard that it can reduce fire, and it also tastes good, sweet. But maitong specifically what role may be many people do not know, what is more suitable for the situation is not quite clear, today we will talk about this maitong!

Ophiopogon, a Yin nourishing herb(also called yin tonic), sweet, slightly bitter, slightly cold in nature, goes to the heart, lung, and stomach meridians, and has aNourishing Yin and moistening the lungs, benefiting the stomach and promoting the production of body fluid, clearing the mind and removing vexation.The effect of the product is simply to nourish yin and clear heat.
One might ask.What medical effects does Western medicine view maitake as having?
First of all, maitong is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is generally used more often by TCM practitioners. Under what circumstances will Western medical practitioners use this maitong? For example, if this maitong is combined with other medicines to make a proprietary Chinese medicine or some preparations, then Western medicine may use it, but the overall use is not too much.

According to modern pharmacological studies, maitake has these effects:
I. Anti-myocardial ischemiaThe polysaccharides of Ophiopogon flexneri are capable of resisting myocardial cell injury, promoting neovascularization, and exerting anti-myocardial ischemic effects;
II. AntithromboticMaitake is able to inhibit venous thrombosis by protecting endothelial cells and resisting cell adhesion;
III. Anti-inflammatory effects, Ophiopogon can inhibit the release of inflammatory mediators, the release of eosinophil activation chemotaxis, etc.;
IV. Role of hypoglycemiaMaitake protects pancreatic islet cells and inhibits the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates to exert a hypoglycemic effect;
V. Anti-tumor effectsMaitake is capable of resisting tumor cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis of tumor cells, exerting anti-cancer and anti-tumor effects;
VI. Antioxidant effects, Ophiopogon can scavenge oxygen free radicals and inhibit hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress;
VII. Immunity-enhancing effects, Ophiopogon can increase phagocytosis of macrophages and lymphocyte activity;
VIII. Improvement of liver damageMaitake is capable of improving liver injury and exerting a protective effect against immune liver damage;
IX. Cough suppressant effect, Maitake is able to attenuate the excitability of tracheal parasympathetic neurons and reduce the choline release that plays a role.

According to modern pharmacology, maitake has so many effects thatSo is it possible to drink more maitake tea if there is heart ischemia, or if you are immunocompromised, have diabetes, tumors, liver disease, etc.?
Actually, no.Maitake has these effects, it is only the pharmacological studies that have found it to have these mechanisms of action, which helps in scientific research or product development for pharmaceutical companies. However, it does not mean that maitake can be used for the treatment of these diseases, which is related to the dosage, the way of extraction and the way of intake, and so on. ThereforeFor the time being these pharmacological results are not very instructive for our reality.
So under what circumstances can we use maitong? This is still back to the theory of Chinese medicine, according to the medicinal properties of this medicine, slightly cold, and nourishing Yin, clearing heat, so the following cases we can use more maitong to make tea.

I. Usually prone to bitter mouth, thirst, heartburn, red tongue with little mossThis kind of often Yin deficiency, or have a deficiency fire, you can use Maitou brewing water to drink, if the deficiency fire is obvious, add some chrysanthemum; and Qi deficiency, add some Xiyangshen (note that it is not Astragalus, Qi and Yin deficiency is not suitable for Astragalus).
Second, after the cold there has been a cough, dry cough, less sputum, dry or sore throat, etc.If you have a fever or runny nose, don't use maitake water.
Third, usually easy to hunger, just after eating not long hungry,And I can't eat much at a time. I feel bloated when I eat something.This is often caused by a deficiency of stomach yin. You can use maitake in water and add some yuzhu or dendrobium for better results.
Fourth, usually easily upset, long mouth ulcers, insomnia, red tongue, etc.You can also drink water with maitake, and you can add some lily and dihuang for better effect; if you have mouth ulcers, you can add some raw licorice together.
Fifth, there are some people who often stay up late, or always feel that their kidney yin deficiency, easy dry mouthYou can also drink maitake water with goji berries.

Others may not have obvious symptoms of their own and can't tell if they are hot or cold enough to know if maitake tea is appropriate. Then it's the old-fashioned way of looking at both:
A look at the tongueIf the tongue is light (that is, the tongue is not red), the moss is not dry, watery, mostly cold, generally not very suitable. If the tongue is red, less moss, or moss yellow, generally can drink maitong water.
Second look at the stoolIf the stool is often not shaped, or easy to diarrhea, then don't drink maitake; if a few days are not stool, or stool is more dry, hard, then you can use maitake water to drink.
It's good to think of maitake as simple, just nourishing yin, clearing heat and relieving boredom.
The medical effects of maitake are suggested to be recognized both from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine and modern pharmacological research.
The purpose of learning about maitake is to be able to enjoy its benefits in our daily lives and to bring it into our lives.

Maitake and asparagus have similar effects, but there are many differences. When I was a child, there are plants like leeks inside the field to bloom out a bunch of white or lavender flowers, long blue fruit, think especially beautiful, pulled out, there are bunches of bunches of "small radish", at that time thought it was a wild radish, grew up to know that it is a traditional Chinese medicine, called maitong.

It is said that when Dayu succeeded in ruling the water and had a good harvest of grain, he let the people pour it into the river when they couldn't finish it, and then a kind of grass grew, which is maitong. That's why in Henan, people also call maitong as"Yu Yu Grain", "Yu Leek", "Yu Xia". The history of maitake is very long, with early records in the "Er Ya" and in the "TheShennong's Classic of the Materia Medica classifies maitake as a superior product.The so-called top quality does not mean that it is as expensive as cordyceps, ginseng, etc., but rather that these drugs have fewer side effects, are safer to apply, have good efficacy and are widely used.

So what are the medical effects of Ophiopogon? We can explore from his sex flavor attribution and efficacy.

In addition to this, maitakeCredo (section of Catholic mass)The difference between maitake and asparagus is the attribution of the meridian, which leads to a difference in efficacy. Maitong as a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, was first recorded in the "Shennong Ben Cao Jing", and is classified as the top grade, but also said that it "long time to take light body, not old and not hungry". Seeing this sentence, many people may think that this is simply a fairy grass, but such a statement is only to show that maitake this a Chinese medicine is very beneficial to the human body if taken regularly. So, what exactly are the medical effects of maitake? Surprisingly, it has been listed as a top quality in "Shennong's Classic of the Materia Medica", and I'll talk to you about it below.

What are the effects of maitake?
I wonder if anyone has ever seen a plant like maitake? I bought some maitake online last time, and the store just happened to send a few maitake plants, which are now planted on the balcony, looking green and lush. For maitong, here's a quote that describes it like this: "...... Leaves are green like sedge, long as more than a foot, does not wither in all seasons, the root is yellowish-white with whiskers, the root is like the shape of the connecting beads. April bloom pale red flowers, such as red polygonum. The solid blue and round like a pearl ......"
In fact, the leaves of maitake and leek leaves are very similar, the leaves are long and narrow, in Yuzhou, Henan Province is known as "Yu leek", which also indicates that the appearance of the leaves of maitake grows very much like leeks. Although the leaves of maitong are similar to leeks, but the root is not the same, maitong's root system is very developed, with many whiskers, and the root system of the middle or near the end of the root system is often swollen into an oval or fusiform rootlets (see the picture below), and this is the part of the medicinal use, it looks like the surface is light yellowish-white and plump texture is relatively soft, with a weak aroma, chewing, it will feel the taste of sweetness.

For the efficacy of maitake, in fact, clinical is also often used, especially in the fall when the dryness of the cough, Chinese medicine doctors will often prescribe maitake this flavor of Chinese medicine, can play a moisturizing effect of the lungs to stop coughing, it can be said to be the best nourishing drugs.
And the main effects of maitake are well documented inside the Chinese Pharmacopoeia:
Sweet, slightly bitter, slightly cold. Attributes to the heart, lung and stomach meridians. Functions and Indications Nourish yin and promote the production of body fluid, moisten the lung and clear the heart. Used for lung dryness and dry cough. Consumptive cough, fluid injury and thirst, heartburn and insomnia, internal heat and thirst, intestinal dryness and constipation; pharyngeal diphtheria.
From the above records, we can know that maitake mainly has the effect of nourishing yin, moistening the lungs, relieving cough, clearing the heart and removing vexation, which can clear the gold and lower the fire, moistening the dryness and nourishing the yin, and therefore has the following several uses:
① can be used for lung dryness and dry cough, mainly refers to the dry weather in autumn, and the lungs are injured by the autumn dryness, resulting in cough, and manifested as a dry cough without sputum or little sputum, and will be accompanied by sore throat, itchy pharynx, and dry mouth and lips.
② can be used for yin deficiency consumptive cough, mainly refers to long-term illness caused by the body's yin fluid depletion and deficiency and the emergence of consumptive cough, generally can refer to the cough caused by tuberculosis.
③It can be used for thirst caused by deficiency of yin in the lungs and stomach, which mainly refers to the deficiency of yin in the lungs and stomach thus resulting in a lack of fluid in the body, and without sufficient fluid, the human body will experience a lack of fluid and thirst.
④ can be used for intestinal constipation, the elderly often due to blood deficiency so that the body fluid is insufficient, and thus prone to intestinal constipation, this time the appropriate use of maitake, can play a supplement to the yin fluid, so as to achieve the laxative bowel movement.
⑤ It can be used for insomnia or palpitation caused by insufficiency of heart yin, which is mainly due to the disturbance of heart fire, thus causing insomnia and palpitation, etc., and Maidong clears the heart to eliminate the disturbance and is suitable for this purpose.
Lastly, the Materia Medica Sub-Commandment also states that it can be used for "all conditions where there is a deficiency of yin and fire". In other words, as long as there is a deficiency of yin and fire in the body, maitong can be used appropriately.
Overall, maitong, a Chinese medicine, not only has the function of nourishing yin, can nourish yin and produce fluids, especially good at clearing and nourishing the yin of the lungs and stomach, but also can moisturize the lungs and clear the heart, which can clear the heat of the heart meridian.

Precautions for the use of Ophiopogon
The medicinal properties of maitake are slightly bitter and cold, therefore, it is not suitable for anyone to use, especially for people with cold spleen and stomach accompanied by diarrhea, loose stools, and white tongue, etc. It cannot be used.
In addition, not all coughs can be used, it has been said that for dry lung cough, consumptive cough, etc., and for the cough caused by wind-cold is not suitable for use. Finally, maitong is also different in application, the traditional view, nourishing yin and moistening the lungs, stomach to promote the production of fluids more use to go to the heart of maitong, while clearing the heart to remove the annoyance of the heart of maitong more use to connect the heart of maitong.
Finally, for the efficacy of the introduction of maitake, this article is only for medical knowledge of popular science, not for clinical use of guidance, if you need to use, it is best to consult a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine before use.

Maitong is the short name for the herb Mai Men Dong, which is called Maitong because the root resembles wheat, but has a beard, and the overriding cold is not adjusted. As early as the Han Dynasty, Maimendong appeared in the Shennong Ben Cao Jing (Classic of the Materia Medica of Shen Nong). In that book, the medicinal properties of Maimendong have been summarized very well, so let's get to know this Chinese medicine from the "top grade".

The Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica records that maitake is "the main heart and abdomen knot gas, hurt in the middle, hurt satiety, stomach and vein extinction, thinness and shortness of breath", and it is now believed that maitake can nourish yin and moisten the lungs, benefit the stomach and promote the production of fluids, and clear the heart in addition to annoyance. Although the efficacy is there, but many people see after or will not apply maitake, lung yin deficiency can be used? Stomach yin deficiency should be used? This is when the Shennong Ben Cao Jing comes into play, what circumstances can be used? Yin deficiency resulting in impassable qi, weak pulse, shortness of breath and weakness, being injured by food and drink, and so on.

If I want to say that I have used it well, I have to say that it was used by my forefather, Mr. Zhongjing. For the treatment of "extinction of the veins in the stomach", Mr. Zhongjing had a formula called Zhaogangcao Tang (炙甘草汤). The name of the soup may not be known, but there is another name for the soup, which can restore the fluctuation of the pulse, so you can imagine the effect of the soup. In the "Treatise on Typhoid Fever" recorded floating pulse soup for the treatment of "pulse junction generation, heart palpitations", what is the pulse junction generation is the pulse is jumping at times not adjusted, this is not "pulse extinction". In the "Roasted Licorice Soup", maitong was used to nourish the heart's yin, which, together with other herbs, restored the pulse to normal. In later times, there is a side of Shengmusan, also often used in clinical practice, composed of only three medicines, maitong, ginseng, schizandra, inherited the idea of zhongjing re pulse soup, used for the evidence of heat damage to the fluid.
Another famous formula of Zhang Zhongjing using Mai Dong is Mai Men Dong Tang (麦門冬汤), which is used to treat "fire and Qi upward reversal, throat unfavorable", its function is to "stop reversal of Qi downward", Mai Dong is beneficial to the throat, and it can bring down the fire in the lungs and stomach, and nourish the yin of the lungs and stomach. Half-summer with maitake can be said to be the classic of the classics, the dosage ratio is also the most noteworthy.

Of course many yin nourishing formulas were created in later times that used maitake. Like Yi Stomach Tang to treat stomach yin deficiency, Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang to treat dryness of the lungs over yin, and Qing Dryness Rescue Lung Tang to treat lung heat and fluid injury. Because maitong has the ability to treat lung and stomach yin injuries and has some fire-clearing properties, it is widely used in the treatment of thirst-quenching syndrome, and is now an important drug in the treatment of yin-deficient diabetes mellitus.
The lungs and the large intestine are mutually exclusive, the lung yin insufficiency, will often cause the large intestine fluid insufficiency, resulting in constipation.
