What should diabetics do if they faint?

Wu Yibo, a member of the Chinese Popular Science Writers Association, is here to answer your questions.

Simply put, nowadays, due to the improvement of living standard, more and more people have high blood glucose, blood pressure and blood fat, and more and more people have joined the ranks of diabetes as a "rich disease". Many patients with diabetes or high blood sugar have fainted, so how do we correctly deal with "sugar" fainting? How to prevent it?

The first cause of fainting that comes to mind is mostly low blood sugar."Sugar lovers", because they regularly take hypoglycemic drugs or apply insulin to lower blood sugar, are prone to fainting due to hypoglycemia when there is too little sugar in their diet or too much sugar is consumed due to exercise and other reasons. Therefore, it is recommended that patients with high blood sugar carry hard candies and cookies with them, so that they can replenish sugar when they experience dizziness, panic, cold sweat, hunger, trembling, pallor, etc., and then go to the neighborhood to check their blood glucose or the hospital in time. If the treatment is not timely will soon fall into a coma. And hypoglycemia can cause a lot of damage to brain tissue, so be sure to take extra care.

However, if you feel weak and feeble and at the same time obviously thirsty, especially in summer, you must first replenish water rather than sugar. Because diabetic patients urinate and sweat a lot will cause a lot of water loss, especially in the summer, if you do not pay attention to timely supplementation of water is easy to cause dehydration, dehydration is serious when diabetes non-ketotic hypertonic coma may occur, and untimely treatment may be life-threatening.So "sugar lovers" must have a sense of prevention, to ensure adequate water intake, pay attention to water replenishment after exercise.

Another common reason is because of ketoacidosis, an acute complication of diabetes. When there is a severe shortage of insulin in our body, or a lack of sugar, it produces energy to supply the body by breaking down fat. When too much fat is broken down, the concentration of ketone bodies, a metabolite of fat, increases. Ketone bodies are acids, and if they accumulate in the bloodstream in excess, they can cause syndromes such as hyperglycemia, hyperketonemia, ketonuria, dehydration, electrolyte disorders, and metabolic acidosis, which we call ketoacidosis. In the early stage of ketoacidosis, there will be dizziness, depression, nausea and vomiting, etc. If the treatment is not timely, there will be further symptoms of dehydration such as decreased urine output, dry skin, sunken eyes, etc. If the dehydration is severe, there will be a weak pulse, etc., and even shock and other life-threatening conditions will occur. When ketoacidosis occurs, the most typical feature is that the patient will have rotten apple flavor when breathing, so it is easy to identify, pay attention to timely medical treatment, do not blindly supplement sugar.

Also, watch out for heat strokes in the summer.Stroke not only occurs in winter, but also in summer, and the higher the temperature, the greater the risk of stroke. Therefore, if you have dizziness, headache, numbness of half of your body and general fatigue in summer, you should go to the hospital and have a CT scan to rule out the possibility of "heat stroke". In addition, high blood sugar state will lead to endothelial cell damage in the arterial lining, lipids, mucopolysaccharides and other deposits in the vascular wall caused by vascular stenosis, and summer blowing air conditioning, eating cold drinks will cause vasoconstriction of the whole body, blood pressure rises, easy to induce heart attack. So if there is persistent dizziness, chest tightness, chest pain, etc., pay attention to the investigation of heart attack.
